Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treated by Acupuncture

Are you having tingling, numbness, and pain of the arms, wrists and hands? Struggling with doing regular activities such as holding things, doing yoga, riding your bicycle? Then you may be suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome.  Treatments vary from home care, such as home splints (can be purchased at any drug store), which can be effective in mild cases, to more invasive procedures such as surgery. Treatment of carpal tunnel is crucial because if left untreated over time it can lead to loss of feeling and coordination in the fingers and hand. The thumb muscles can become weak and waste away, making it difficult to grip or hold objects. In addition, it could also lead to permanent damage to the median nerve that results in difficulty using the hand. A damaged nerve may require surgery, which may not completely restore the feeling and coordination to the fingers and hand.

A new study brings hope for the treatment of carpal tunnel with a less invasive procedure than surgery – acupuncture is safe, natural, and from clinical experience, very effective.  In a randomized controlled study  is indicated that acupuncture can improve the overall subjective symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.

In my clinical experience I had excellent results with carpal tunnel syndrome. As a Licensed Acupuncturist, I use a combination of therapies rather than just using acupuncture. It is my strong belief and experience that carpal tunnel responds better when combined with other therapies. My expertise in injection therapy is a valuable addition in more severe cases. However, most commonly, acupuncture and different massage techniques usually bring healing within weeks. I am also always looking for ways to empower your healing journey so I also offer self-care tips that you can use at home.

Our patients say it best. Here is a testimonial from a young mom struggling with carpal tunnel syndrome, not being able to even hold her baby.

“I turned to Damiana for help with my carpel tunnel problems, hoping that I wouldn’t have to resort to Cortisone injections, which the orthopedic surgeon had said was my best option.  From my first session with Damiana, I felt relief in my wrists, and over the course of several sessions, I’m happy to say that the pain that had been preventing me from doing so many things in my life (from carrying my baby to practicing yoga) is gone.  I truly appreciate Damiana’s holistic approach to helping her patients.  In addition to the actual acupuncture, she spent a significant amount of time talking with me to learn more about my lifestyle, and was able to suggest other complementary remedies, such as massage and herbal treatments that could help me tackle my wrist pain and the associated issues.  I’m now able to do so many of the things that used to be painful, and I don’t even worry about them causing me pain.  I’ll definitely be back to see Damiana should the pain return, or if I ever find myself needing relief for a different injury. “ ~Emily
